Wands at the ready, everyone! The anticipation for the HBO Harry Potter series just got a huge boost with the release of the very first official teaser. Not only did we get a peek into the magical world coming to our screens, but HBO also confirmed the first season will debut in Christmas 2026, under the title Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
This is a truly exciting time for fans, as the teaser promises a deep dive into the beloved stories, bringing unseen moments to life and showcasing a commitment to J.K. Rowling's original books.
A Glimpse into the Teaser's Magic
The teaser opens with the familiar, yet unsettling, Dursley home on Privet Drive. We see its pristine, ghastly wallpaper and a perfectly grim Uncle Vernon at the kitchen table. The heartbreaking shot of Harry in his cupboard under the stairs, complete with his attempts to make it a home with pictures and drawings, hits hard. Did you spot the flying motorbike in his collection?
This early look immediately establishes Harry’s miserable childhood. But the teaser goes further, confirming we'll see brand-new moments not shown in the films. This includes Harry's tormented time at Muggle school, where his cousin Dudley and his friends chase and corner him. There’s also the infamous haircut incident, with Aunt Petunia's kitchen scissors battling Harry's unruly hair, only for it to grow back overnight.
Moving beyond the Dursleys, we get a heartwarming scene of Harry and Hagrid on the London Underground. This moment also highlights the emotional depth of the series, especially when Hagrid speaks about James and Lily Potter. Better keep tissues handy!
The 1990s setting shines through in every detail, from the Muggles' outfit choices and hairstyles on the Tube to Mrs. Weasley's perfectly 90s ensemble and Aunt Petunia’s enormous glasses. This series is steeped in nostalgia.
Then, we finally enter Hogwarts! The reimagined wizarding school looks incredible. The grand Entrance Hall, with its intricately carved doors and sweeping staircase, is a sight to behold. Professor Sprout’s light and airy greenhouse, filled with magical foliage, and the cozy Gryffindor common room with its squashy chairs were also spotted. There will be so much more to explore within Hogwarts itself.
The house heraldry has a refreshed look, with new emblems hanging in the Entrance Hall and on Quidditch robes. While colors and mascots remain the same, the Hogwarts crest has been simplified to a striking 'H' rather than a full coat of arms.
The iconic Sorting Hat makes an appearance, looking exactly as described in the books: a patched and frayed pointed wizard’s hat with a rip near the brim like a mouth. We also see the moment Harry receives his wand, a straightforward design with subtle handle detailing that suits him perfectly.
Quidditch gets its moment too! The costume and art departments have outdone themselves, showcasing Harry’s black and red Nimbus 2000 box, Quidditch uniforms with embroidered cloaks, and brooms with fanned-out bristles, all with a wonderfully whimsical feel.
One delightful book moment never before seen on screen is the Christmas snowball fight. If Hagrid’s snow angel doesn't bring a smile to your face, we're not sure what will!
Many Familiar Faces Spotted
The teaser gave us a first look at a host of beloved characters. We saw Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, the Dursleys, Molly Weasley, Garrick Ollivander, Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, and Pansy Parkinson. That's quite a lineup!
Every shot in the teaser reveals the incredible care and attention to detail. From the new designs for wizarding sweets like Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans and Dumbledore’s half-moon spectacles to even the smudge of dirt on Ron Weasley’s nose, the world feels incredibly convincing. And this is just the beginning; the spectacular new score by Hans Zimmer is still to come.
The series will launch in Christmas 2026 on HBO and will be available exclusively on HBO Max in regions where it's offered, including Germany, Italy, and the UK & Ireland.
Francesca Gardiner is the writer and executive producer for this highly anticipated series. Mark Mylod will serve as executive producer and direct several episodes for HBO. Executive producing credits also go to J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film & TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.
